How Does the Echolocation System of a Bat Work?
You have very likely heard the term "blind as a bat" before. It is a very fitting cliché, as bats have terrible vision. It is one of the primary reasons why these animals hunt during the night and sleep during the day. They literally cannot see what is around them, so being out in the daylight would make them a sitting duck to potential predators.

Blind But Not Helpless
While bats may be blind, it does not mean they are helpless in any way. These animals have an excellent sense of smell but, more importantly, they have an impressive sonar like system that enables them to avoid predators, find food, and return to their home each night. This is referred to as the echolocation system.  If you are unfamiliar with this term, the echolocation system is an enhanced process in the bat where a sonar like signal is sent out from the animal. It bounces off all objects all around them, then returns a signal back to the bat that tells it what is in front of it. It is an extremely sophisticated system that happens in fractions of a second. It truly is impressive. This system is so sophisticated that the bat is not hampered in any way due to its lack of vision. The ultrasonic pulses are sent out in all directions, then quickly returns to the animal where its brain processes the information at an incredibly fast rate. Keep in mind that these animals are flying and moving with great speed. That ultrasonic pulse has to be sent, returned, and processed faster than almost any computer system on the planet. It is truly amazing.

The Bat Would Be Doomed Otherwise
What is so impressive about this system is that the bat would be completely doomed without it. Think about an owl moving toward a bat that is no more than just four or 5 feet away from it. Not only does the bat have to process that an animal like an owl is that close to it, but a signal has to be sent, returned, and processed to tell the bat to move away from the owl quickly. Then, that signal has to continue and continually be processed so that the bat can avoid the owl until it is able to get away. Without this sophisticated echolocation system the bat would be doomed. Bats in general would be extinct by this point. There is no way that these creatures could survive, fly each night, find food, and return if it was not for the way that this system works.  This is one of the most impressive systems that God has created for any animal, and it is helped bats to thrive for generations. That may not be a pleasant thought for someone who has been battling bats getting into their home, but one truly has to marvel at this creation. It is truly spectacular how these animals have prospered and survive.
